Metric Rules was created to promote the importance of measurement as the foundation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) instruction. As such, we believe that STEM instruction is like a house, in that it is only as strong as the foundation on which it was built. Cracks in the base of a house impact all areas of the structure. STEM instruction is designed upon and around our understanding of measurement.
Because of the significant and cumulative stock of classroom time consumed trying to build STEM literacy on two different foundations- customary units and metric units. This practice has contributed to making measurement, the domain of least relative competence for U.S. students (Barrett 2012). Anchored in science, designed to facilitate easy mathematical calculations and the most accurate measurement system ever created, we promote single measurement STEM instruction using metric units only.
We believe change will only transpire when many voices are contributing to the solutions and many more are demanding responsiveness from decision-makers.
